Old About Me
Hello and welcome to The Formula Magician. Named after my second account on Xbox Live, it’s where I come to talk about the world of gaming, and other things in general as and when they find their way into my mind. Things have been quiet here since mid-2013, but I’m hoping that I can pin the blame for that on maths, and get back to posting here with some kind of regularity.

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Stephan. I’m a whopping height of 5’8″ and was born and raised in the town of Rugby, Warwickshire. I’m a second year A Level student at Warwickshire College. As planned the subjects I am studying are chemistry, biology and maths. I still go to the Leamington campus, and still believe that Leamington looks nicer than Rugby.
My family has plenty of pets: five cats and a German Shepherd. I’ll be introducing you to these guys and gals in a future blog post sometime soon. After I finish my studies I have my heart set on getting some chinchillas.
My plans for the future have changed a number of times since leaving school, but I finally feel like I am on the right track. After I finish my A Levels in 2014 I want to go to university to study for a chemistry degree. I am currently in the process of sending my application through UCAS, so here’s to hoping that I’ll be receiving some offers sometime soon.
What platforms do you play games on?
The new generation of consoles is out of my reach financially at the moment, so the vast majority of my gaming still takes place on either my Playstation, Xbox 360 or Wii. I have a few games on my DS that I enjoy playing, and there are a number more that I would like to add to my collection at some point, such as the sequel to Hotel Dusk.
What games are you currently playing?
Other than Dead Island on the 360, it’s my Wii that has been the recipient of my gaming love. I’ve been playing Little King’s Story, Resident Evil and Cursed Mountain.
Now that The Last of Us has hit the shop shelves it has been enjoying more than its fair share of my attention. I’ve really been enjoying it so far.
I’ve also finally made a start on Shadow of the Colossus after it had been sitting on my PS3’s hard drive for almost a year.
What games are you looking forward to getting your hands on?
Dreamfall Chapters – after years of silence talk of this game finally resurfaced earlier this year. Whilst blowing its Kickstarter goal out of the water we were treated to plenty of new information about how this game will continue the story of Zoe and April. This is one game I can’t wait to get my hands on.
Everybody’s Golf 6 – if I had to give a rough estimate of how much time I had spent enjoying Everybody’s Golf: World Tour I would likely return with an answer in the region of 400 hours. In that time I only managed to get an albatross on three occasions, but the fun that could be had both playing a round of golf with friends, and just messing around in the online lobby meant I kept coming back. Now this game has a release period for the PS3 I can’t wait to do it all again, but this time I will hopefully make it higher up the online tournament ladder
Would you ever consider writing reviews for games?
Whilst I wouldn’t want to completely rule out the possibility of reviewing games here in the future, for the time being it’s not something I’m aiming to do. I would have to work on the speed I complete games because currently, by the time I have played a game enough to be able to attempt to write a fair, complete and detailed review, other websites and blogs have done the same for the game’s sequel. My case-in-point would be Tropico 3 – brilliant game, but I’m 2/3 of the way through the campaign and Tropico 4 has been out since the middle 2011.
Besides gaming, what other interests/hobbies do you have?
I enjoy watching and playing football; being a Leeds United fan means you never know what to expect, but I guess that’s why we love them. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels and am currently working my way through A Clash of Kings, part of the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R Martin. When I first started reading this series it took me a few chapters to start enjoying it, but I am so glad I kept going because it’s had me hooked since. If anyone is curious my favourite characters are Arya Stark and Tyrion Lannister. I have also started reading Perfect People by Peter James in the last week, and am hoping to reach my new Goodreads goal of reading 10 books before the end of the year.
Last year I started to become interested in anime and, based on recommendations by friends, decided to start my anime experience by watching Elfen Lied. I thoroughly enjoyed the series — it’s one of the best programs I’ve watched in years. After watching Elfen Lied I moved on to Higurashi No Naku Koro. This anime was at the top of Anime Planet’s recommended animes for those who enjoyed Elfen Lied, so I figured I’d give it a try. I found it very confusing for the first few episodes, but eventually everything came together and I really enjoyed it. I’ve recently finished watching Nyan Koi! which I enjoyed. I can’t say I’m jealous of not having the ability to communicate with cats myself. That technology/magic can stay well away from this plane of existence.
The DVD of Game of Thrones’ second season has finally released and I have been thoroughly enjoying watching that. My favourite TV show at the moment has to be The Middle. I love watching that with my sister, and it never fails to make me laugh every episode. Needless to say, we are both greatly anticipating the fifth season. Other shows I enjoy are NCIS and the various CSI shows along with Modern Family.
I decided late last year that I’d like to try my hand at learning a musical instrument in 2013. My choice for this challenge was the violin. It’s an instrument that I’ve always had an urge to try to some degree ever since we used to sit in the assembly hall in primary school watching my fellow pupils show us what they had been taught. I have been slacking off with my practicing in recent weeks though, but I plan on putting that right this week. Maybe one day I will traumatise the YouTube servers with a video of my music making capabilities.
I’m going to continue adding to and changing this as time goes on. If there is anything else you would like to know please feel free to post a comment below, and thanks as always for reading.
